Beyond This Moment

The term “new normal” is being thrown about recently with no real idea of what that actually means.  Perhaps the best way to answer the question of what your “new normal” will be is by looking forward to the goals you have set yourself in different areas of your life and adjusting your attitudes, beliefs and actions to be aligned with the goals of your future.

Whether your future being and doing is similar to that of the past or not is irrelevant.  What matters most is if your attitude and actions are aligned with where you want to head.

Take a moment to ask yourself:

What are the important goals you have set yourself for the coming 12 months to 3 years?

Who do you need to be to worthy of achieving those goals?

What do you need to do to make these goals a reality?

I don’t know about you but sometimes when I hear people say “let’s create a new normal” it makes me feel that how I was operating before was wrong in some way. However, in the environmental context of yesterday, how I was operating made complete sense and was helping me achieve my outcome. I don’t want to devalue the choices and decisions I made in the past simply because through circumstance I can look back in hindsight and see how I could have made difference choices.

Anyone can be an expert with the power of hindsight!

So rather than me answering the question of what my new normal will be, I’m choosing to ask a higher quality question:

“How do I need to adjust who I am and what I do in order to reach goals that are important to me in the year ahead and beyond?”

By settling on a new normal it also presupposes that you’re about to lock in a new way of being and doing which to me leads to a fixed mindset. By asking a higher quality question based on identifying the adjustments I need to make to who I am and what I do in line with goals I’ve set for my future ensures I will keep adapting and adjusting as needed. Whether that’s for goals I set or unexpected situations.

In this way I’m staying focused on growing, on adapting, on changing my approach to the ever changing world around me and my ever changing internal state and desires.

Much more empowering!
