We each need a level of certainty in order to feel safe and secure in our environment. In normal circumstances we utilise habits and routines to create a sense of certainty. However, when disruption occurs it leads to higher levels of uncertainty requiring us to find our new rhythm. This can lead us to take extreme measures in order to regain a level of certainty and control. This level is different for each person.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
How much certainty do you need to feel safe and secure?
What are all the ways in which you can have your need for certainty met in the current circumstances?
How will you know when to stop seeking certainty?
By answering these questions we can begin to understand the lengths we go to, the behaviours we display and the inner talk at play, all driven to re-establish a level of certainty in our lives. To make us feel safe and secure once more.
Once you have the answers to these questions you can start to see where you attitudes and beliefs may be causing you to over-react in certain situations or perhaps gloss over important information downplaying the severity of a situation.
It’s usual to feel our level of certainty is determined by elements outside our control, however, there are always elements completely within our control that can empower us to find certainty in uncertain situations.
Only you can determine the actions you need to take in order to feel safe and secure when your world gets turned upside down. By asking yourself these three questions you can make sure the action you take is considered and displayed in calm manner.
